My Elementary School

Retrieved from http://www.newcityschool.org

An important aspect of how I learn now has to do with the elementary school I attended. From 1st to 6th grade, I attended New City School in St. Louis. The school itself is based on Howard Gardner's theory of the 7 multiple intelligences:

1) Interpersonal
2) Intrapersonal
3) Logical-Mathematical
4) Linguistical
5) Musical
6) Bodily-Kinesthetic
7) Spatial

I would rank my strengths in the 7 multiple intelligences (in the order from greatest to least) would be the following:
1) Musical
2) Spatial
3) Linguistical
4) Bodily-Kinesthetic
5) Logical-Mathematical
6) Interpersonal
7) Intrapersonal

How I learn has a lot to do with how these 7 multiple intelligences continue to show themselves now in my adulthood.

How I Learn: My Personality

One aspect of how I learn has to do with my personality. While growing up, my parents encouraged me to be creative. There are different facets of my creativity, but below are examples of the way in which I am creative:

Drawing:

While I was growing up, I always had an interest in drawing. Around 6th grade, my interest intensified and I began creating a series of pieces. I continued to draw through high school. I was never formally trained in drawing. Below are some samples of my work; all of them were drawn while I was in Elementary School.

Photography:
Another aspect of my creativity has to do with my love of photography. Looking at photos, allows me to learn not only about new places, but different types of people. Below are samples of photos from my portfolio.

Music:
A central part of my personality has to do with music and its importance in my life. I began to study music at an early age (4 yrs old). Over the years I began to realize music was a way to help me learn non-musical topics. In the last couple of years, I have written music professionally. Below are links to samples of my work.

Constantly Learning

I've quickly seen that a very large percentage of teaching is learning constantly. I named this blog "Today I learned..." to speak to that aspect of teaching. After thinking about how I learn in general (and how I learned at the elementary level), I realized the following aspects about myself.

1) How I learn is based on my creative personality.
2) How I learn is based on the creative and unique atmosphere of my elementary school.
3) I learn the most by using creativity and connecting creativity to real-world funds of knowledge.
4) My learning is built on previous things "learned"; therefore my learning is constant and builds from what I previously learned.

In the following blogs, I will explore these aspects.
